Capt. Manuel Menendez, retired as Major, in front of "Arctic Queen", a B-17, with his crew before a photo-mapping mission over Northern Greenland. One day "Arctic Queen" was going to photo map, there was a thick fog over the area, Menendez, as a joke, asked the crew if they wanted to go to the North Pole. After five minutes one the navigators had a course plotted out, and off they went. Because it was an unauthorized trip, Menendez told the photographer to start the cameras up to satisfy the high brass. The pictures became of very high scientific interest. The trip to the North Pole was the first made from Greenland in an B-17 ever.
