INTRODUCTION - A LITTLE HISTORY
BW-1 Memorials (Twin memorial plaques provided by the Narsarssuak Air Base Association) . The Narsarssuak Air Base (Narsarsuaq) was a joint effort by the United States of America and Denmark, code named Bluie West One. During World War II its assigned aircraft escorted allied convoys in the North Atlantic tracking and destroying German submarines. A military hospital with 250 beds was completed in 1943.
After WW II, NAB served an important role with Air Sea Rescue, Weather information in the upper northern hemisphere, aircraft stop over and refueling and a vital link in the North East Air Command communications systems. Strategic roles for that time, however long range in-flight refueling, weather and communications satellites have replaced those functions since 1958.
